Gem- Soda Bread

Hearty soda bread, so quick to make and so delicious!  

Ingredients

175g Plain Flour

  • 175g Wholemeal Flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Gem Bread Soda
  • 290ml Buttermilk 

 

Prep time: 10 Mins 

Bake time : 30 Mins 

Total time: 40 Mins 

Servings: 1 Loaf 

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 225°C and flour and 8″ round cake tin
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add all the dry ingredients. Give them a whisk to distribute evenly.
  3. Add in the buttermilk and using your hand in a claw shape, mix quickly until a rough dough forms, this won’t take long at all.
  4. Lightly flour a work surface and turn the dough out. Being very gentle, shape it into a ball by tucking the underneath in on itself. Gently press down to form a disc.
  5. Flour the top of the dough and score a deep cross all the way across, making 4 clear quarter but don’t cut them separate. Lightly flour the top of the dough.
  6. Bake at 225°C for 15 minutes and then turn the oven to 190°C and bake for a further 15 minutes or until the bread sounds hollow when you tap on th bottom.
  7. Serve with butter and jam!
