Our Funding Process
Children’s Health Foundation’s role to raise funds to support the vital, life-saving work that takes place every minute of every day in Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) hospitals and urgent care centres. From funding essential equipment and patient and parental support to making new services and ground-breaking paediatric research possible.
Grants Advisory Panel Process
The Grants Advisory Panel – or ‘GAP’ Process allows your department to apply for Children’s Health Foundation funding of up to €500,000.
This process is applicable to initiatives that meet one of Children’s Health Foundation’s core pillars:
- New and Emerging Services / Development Initiatives
- Patient, Family and Staff Impact Initiatives
- Advancing Medical Equipment and Systems
Please note that applications for Research and Innovation will be subject to a different process.
This process has been developed by Children’s Health Foundation to provide a robust and transparent way to allocate funding in a fair and consistent manner – while ensuring alignment with the needs of CHI.
Clinical and Medical Education & Training Funding Call 2023
Children’s Health Foundation is delighted to announce the introduction of a new Clinical and Medical Education & Training funding call to support CHI staff.
Applications will only be accepted as a single PDF document. Applications submitted in any other form, incomplete or multiple documents will be automatically excluded from the process.
On completion, the application form should be scanned and emailed in PDF format only to grants@childrenshealth.ie applications will only be accepted for consideration from this email account.
The closing date for applications is Friday, 10th March 2023 at 5pm.
This process is open to staff who wish to pursue Academic Study and Professional Training that will bring a benefit and impact within one of the following key pillars.
1. New and Emerging Services/Development Initiatives
2. Patient, Family & Staff Impact Initiatives
This process has been developed by Children’s Health Foundation to provide a robust and transparent way to allocate funding in a fair and consistent manner – while ensuring alignment with the needs of CHI.
Children’s Health Foundation Education and Training Funding Priorities and Parameters
Priority will be given to training that has a direct impact on the services and care provided to patients and their families. Following a review of the applications received at our last Education and Training Funding Call the following priorities and parameters will apply for 2023.
Priority will be given to:
• Patient-focused team members – CHI staff members who have direct regular contact with patients as part of their role
• Training that will have a direct impact on child and patient health
• Applicants not in receipt of additional Education / Training funding
• Applicants who are not currently enrolled on an Education or Training course
• Permanent Staff members with a minimum of two years’ service
Factors to be taken into consideration when applying for funding:
• One application for training per person
• Training must be beneficial to the applicant’s work and departmental needs
• We are unable to approve group applications at this point, please complete one application per person.
- Children’s Health Foundation will fund 50% of the total course fee of successful applicants up to a maximum of €5,000.
- Successful applications of €1,000 or less will be fully funded.
- Documentation for all costs must be submitted with the application form.
- Travel expenses must be in line with the CHI Travel & Expense Policy, and per the CHI Education & Study Support Policy

Children's Health Foundation announces partnership with SFI
This exciting new partnership will see Children’s Health Foundation and SFI provide match-funding opportunities for research projects that have the potential to find new cures and treatments for sick children and change the future of paediatric healthcare.
Children’s Health Foundation will provide a minimum of €2million in 2022 for research project funding, matched by SFI for successful projects. The call for proposals are now open with a submission deadline of 28th January 2022. SFI will run the grant call, peer review, selection and awarding of these successful projects.
Commenting on the partnership, Chief Executive of Children’s Health Foundation, Denise Fitzgerald, said, “Children’s Health Foundation believes in the power of research to improve outcomes for sick children and transform young lives for the better. This collaboration with SFI is an important step forward to achieve this goal. It will maximise funding available to the paediatric research community, helping develop new cures and discoveries. We are excited to work hand-in-hand with SFI on this initiative, made possible through the generous donations of our committed supporters, and we look forward to working together over the next year.”
